19th Century French Chassepot Bayonet

A mid 19th century French Chassepot bayonet. The M1866 Chassepot bayonet was designed to fit on the French M1866 Chassepot infantry rifle. It was manufactured from 1866 to about 1874 when it was replaced by the French Model 1874 Le Gras rifle.

The bayonet is complete with scabbard and has a hooked quillon along with a working press release catch. The spine of the blade is dated for 1874 and was manufactured in St Etienne, France.

The scabbard shows some rust but is in solid condition with no holes or dents. The blade still holds a keen edge.

Blade length 57 cm and an overall length of 69.5 cm.
